What does risk mean?

For a beginner, a useful question is: what could happen to this money, and could I cope with that outcome? Prices can fall. You may need to sell at an inconvenient time. Fees can reduce what you keep.

Spreading your exposure

Diversification means spreading investments rather than relying on one holding. It can reduce dependence on a single company or market, but it cannot prevent all losses.

A portfolio is simply the collection of investments you hold. Owning several products does not necessarily mean they hold different underlying investments.

Read beyond the headline

Look at what a product holds, its charges and its risk information. A share represents ownership in a company; a pooled fund brings investors’ money together. Neither structure alone tells you whether a product meets your religious requirements.
